Trigger 5

1. How does the oil industry affect global well-being?

Well first of all, the oil industry creates a huge amount on job's globally. I read an article that concentrated only in the jobs in America and the paragraph above if from May 2014 when there was over 2 million oil industry related jobs in America.

"There is no doubt in my mind that there are risks to the rapid expansion of oil and gas extraction in America, and to the country’s continued dependence on fossil fuels, both in terms of environmental damage and the diversion of resources away from research into the alternative energy sources that will be needed in the future.
When considering those risks, however, we should remember that over 2 million people (and in many cases their families) directly depend on those industries for their livelihood. That level of employment cannot be ignored." (Tillier, M. 2014)
The other example is Russia, they are one of the largest oil producers in the world. In december 2015 they produced 12 % of the world oil, an average of over 10 million barrels per day. If the price of oil falls, it would have a major infect to Russians economy.

2. How to balance supply & demand of unrenevable resources?

With different laws, emission standards, increased energy taxes.

3. How to decrease oil demand with alternative solutions?

Solar energy

-Solar energy is the only almost free energy producer that does not produce any Co2 emissions.

- In country's like Finland, problem is the winter when we don't have enough sunshine, so here we could only use solar energy as a complementary energy source between march and september.

Wind power

- Wind power is the world's fastest growing renewable energy production.

- There is, however, a huge variation in the production of wind energy per month, day and hour so it's not so reliable.

Geothermal heat

In Finland St1- company started thrilling geothermal heat wells in Espoo. Heat sinks are even 7 kilometers deep. This would be a great alternative to district heating.
Fortum is buying this product to their district heating network. It covers up to 10 percent of the city's total district heating demand.

In district heat, about 59 % is coming from fossil energy.
